About us

Improving mental health and substance abuse

Msingi Institute is a non-profit organization working with the highest standards of ethics and integrity to improve mental health and substance use outcomes through education, outreach, advocacy, research and policy initiatives. We partner with individuals, community stakeholders, academics, governments and non-governmental organizations to bring about positive social change for the purposes of overcoming mental illness, substance use and mental health stigma.

Msingi embraces the World Health Organization (WHO) definition of Health which states: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” According to former Surgeon General David Snatcher – “There is no health without Mental Health.” Central to this approach are norms and standards promotes most notably by: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA), United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and World Health Constitution – There is No Health without Mental Health. These acts call for the full realization of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all people with mental health challenges and substance use disorders, without stigma or discrimination of any kind.

What does Msingi mean?

Msingi is not just a name, it is derived from Swahili word meaning – CORE or Foundation! In this context, the places where people live, learn, work and play are the foundation of any community and our mental health is impacted by the world around us. Our name Msingi is our foundation and aligned with our mission and vision. Msingi reflects our approach to complex mental health challenges and it takes into consideration disparities in mental health, substance use as well as research across cultures. Through our work, we are creating and promoting strong foundation for communities, to develop self-sustaining mechanisms to identify and support mental health and substance use needs of those most often underserved and marginalized.
